  • Balancing Rock
This image was made at Arches National Park near Moab, Utah. This landscape absolutely amazed me. It felt other-worldly.

  • Double Arch
Double Arch - Arches National Park, Moab, Utah. This is perhaps the easiest arch to view at Arches National Park. It sits about a quarter mile off the road near a parking area. The unusual thing about this double arch is that it was created by water erosion from above instead of erosion from below. I believe the height of this arch is 110'.

  • Park Avenue
Park Avenue - Arches National Park, Moab, Utah. This is a sunrise shot of the Park Avenue Trail. It's called Park Avenue not because it's in the park but because it feels like walking down Park Avenue in NYC. As you descend 320'on the trail to the canyon floor, the 600' monoliths do start to close in on you. I was all alone here as the sun came up. I was a great way to start the day!

  • Delicate Arch

This image of Delicate Arch (Arches National Park) was made at sunset. I've had this shot on my list for a while and very nearly missed it. I had one chance at a sunset shot and arrived later than I should have to make the (unknown to me) two mile hike up to this spot. I pushed hard and arrived here hot, sweaty, thirsty and very surprised to find 50 other phographes with their lenses pointed at the arch. I edged my tripod in and got this shot within two minutes of being there. Almost missed it! The hike down in the dark was great. Everyone with headlamps on; it looked like fireflys coming down the montain.

While Driving to Lake Powell in Tuah, I saw a sign pointing to Goblin Valley. I had hear about it and didn't miss the opportunity to stop. This place just feels strange. These rock formations are really erie to walk among. It's very quoet and they all seem to have eyes....

  • Linville Falls Plunge Basin

This shot was taken during the late afternoon at the bottom of Linville Gorge. It is a great hike to get to the bottom of the gorge but it's a steep uphill back to the top. Well worth the view! I need to return someday and hike into the gorge at sunrise to get this shot again. Being there in the late afternoon, I had to wait a bit for the sun to drop behind the falls so that I wasn't shooting directly into it. Not ideal shooting conditions and the walk out was dark even though the sun had not fully set.

  • Old Boat House

This is the old boat house on Bald Head Island. There has been an effort to save this structure which was built in 1903 and is one of the oldest structures (besides the lighthouse) on the island still standing. The creek has changed course in the last 100 years and it looks as if the boat house has been left high and dry as no boats can access it.

  • Vine Covered Building

This building sits way too close to the road somewhere north of Yancyville in Caswell County, NC. I'm not sure how it is permitted to remain as close to the road as it is. I had to pull over and get a shot. The contrast is amazing. I caught this in just the right light to show off the texture of the vines.

This gas pump is hiding behind an old gas station somewhere along Virginia State Road 39 near Kerr Lake. I saw this out of the corner of my eye and had to stop. I took this image with an old Kiev 60 camera - Soviet Era Russian. Loved that camera...wish I still had it.

  • House, Portland Oregon

I spent a great week in and around Portland Oregon with lots of time to get out with my camera. This house sits on one of the hills looking over the downtown area. the dramatic entryway on the street caught my attention. The house is actually two large flights of stairs up from the street entry.

  • Newman Machine Shop

Newman Machine shop was a block large complex of buildings housing all kinds of machinery that dealt with the working of metal. The place sat empty for years and I didn't give it much thought. Driving by one day, I noticed that a fence had gone up and that they place was slated to be demolished to make way for an apartment complex. I didn't miss my opportunity to sneak in and photograph it before it was gone. I love the texture of the metal shavings and grease on the floor at this grease trap.

  • NYC Bicycles

I've spent a lot of time in New York City but, for some reason, I don't get out in the city with my camera very often. This shot was taken very early one morning before the streets became crowded. As is normal, anything left out on the street and not well secured will be taken. Even an old bike wheel. It's amazing how lonely the streets of New York feel as the sun is coming up. An hour later, this shot wouldn't have been possible.

  • Circus Poster

During another outing with the camera in Madison, I noticed that the Madison Grocery windows had been covered with sheets and a circus poster had been placed in the window. I thought it was strange since I didn't see this poster anywhere else in town. I love the graphics and the shadow of the letters.

  • Guitar

Scott Manring, a well known Greensboro musician, has an amazing collection of instruments. I spent an afternoon at his String Studio on Elam Ave. in Greensboro photographing his instruments. This shot fits my aesthetic preference for the detail as opposed to the whole. This well played guitar shows lots of character.

  • Fabric Store

This was shot in downtown Denton, NC. It appeared to be a fabric manufacturing shop. The only sign was the word "Fabric" painted onto the plate glass window. The machinery looks to be amazingly complicated. I imagine that it took a lot of effort to keep this equipment running and the production must have been very low as the place was really small.

  • Bonaventure Cemetary

I spent an afternoon shooting in the Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah, GA. This is an amazing cemetery with a lot of history. This place became famous when it was featured in the novel, "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil". The cover of the book featured an image of a tombstone statue named the "Bird Girl" which became such an iconic image that the statue had to be removed from the cemetery to prevent vandalism. It now resides in a Savannah museum. I spent about four hours at this place and did not come across another (living) person in my time there. The overwhelming feeling of what I can only describe as "quiet" is brought back to me strongly as I look at this image.

  • Parking Deck
This imgae was made at a public paring deck in Greensboro, NC. The exit is an eight story, circular, descending drive. Enough to make you dizzy by the bottom. Skateboarders love it. I shot this lying in the weeds at the bottom of the structure shooting straight up towards the sky. I locked the camera onto the tripod with just enough room to get my head under to compose the shot. I exposed three frames to get this HDR image.

  • Bixby Bridge
The Bixby Bridge is about 15 miles south of Carmel, California on Highway 1. I shot this image late at night under the full moon over Easter weekend 2012. It was cold and very windy and I had to wait about an hour and a half for the moon to fully rise over the mountain behind where I was set-up. It's hard to imagine by looking at this image but I could barley see the bridge in the dark - and nothing of the ocean. I was standing at the top of a 300' cliff with the camera pointed in the direction of the bridge and had to make an image to compose the shot. I would shoot, view and then adjust the framing. The camera could see the image but I couldn't. This is a 90 second exposure at high ISO.

Bald Head Island is an amazing oasis. Only accessible by ferry and no cars allowed, it is a wonderful place to escape our busy lives and relax. The iconic Bald Head Light has been photographed many times but I just had to get my version. I spent an afternoon and early evening sitting in this spot to get this image. This is a composite of five images to capture the detail and to get the light as it was coming on. There are always people around the light house in golf carts and bikes, so it is a rare click of the shutter to capture it with out people on the street. Not an easy shot to get.

  • Madison Grocery

This image was made on E. Murphy St. In Madison, NC. Madison is a typical small North Carolina town which has past its better days. There has been an effort to reclaim some of the old downtown buildings for better use but The Madison Grocery sits stubbornly empty. The owner apparently didn't care that it was falling in and would not either maintain or sell the building. I don't know the whole story but it seems odd to just let a great building like this to fall into ruin on purpose. I've not been to Madison in a long time. I don't know the current condition of this property.

Scenic and Still Life - B&W

This portfolio is an eclectic overview of the many different types of subjects that I shoot. I enjoy shooting on location as well as in the studio. I've yet to define what it is that makes me stop and get the camera out but I know it when it happens. All of these images bring back a strong memory of a time and a place for me. I hope that I am able to transfer something of what I was feeling in these places to you as you view the images.
